Background

Judges is set in the period after Joshua and before a king was established in Israel. The people settled in the Promised Land, but they did not honor God as King; they mixed with the surrounding peoples and drifted further and further from the covenant. This era is summed up in the words, “In those days there was no king in Israel. Everyone did what was right in his own eyes.” Judges is not a book recording political chaos; it is a theological history showing how human society and faith collapse when God is rejected as King. This background strongly highlights the need for the rule of God, the true King, before any human king or leader.

Content

Judges unfolds in one repeated pattern. It is a cycle in which Israel leaves God and serves idols, is oppressed as a result, cries out in its suffering, and God raises up a judge to deliver them. This pattern reveals how deeply rooted human disobedience is, and at the same time shows how persistently God’s compassion continues. The people raised up as judges are all imperfect. They have moral and spiritual flaws, and even after being delivered, the people leave God again. This makes it clear that the judges cannot be the true savior. Judges deliberately does not create heroes and does not hide the limits of human leaders. As the book moves toward its latter part, Israel’s condition grows steadily worse. The morality and faith of the community collapse, and the chaos reaches its peak. Yet even so, God does not entirely withdraw His hand of deliverance. This testifies that God’s grace is deeper than human depravity. In the end, through the repeated cycle of sin and failure, Judges shows that the answer to salvation cannot be found within human beings. This book leads us to wait for the King who will break the vicious cycle of sin once for all and save His people through perfect obedience and true rule, namely Jesus Christ.
