Genesis 1

In the beginning God
created the heavens and the earth

The earth was formless and empty,
darkness covered the deep,
and God's Spirit hovered over the waters.

Genesis 1:1–2
1
Day One

Let there be light

God said, Let there be light, and there was light.
God saw that the light was good.

There was evening and morning: the first day.

2
Day Two

Let there be an expanse amid the waters
to separate water from water

God made the expanse,
separating the waters below from the waters above.
And it was so.

There was evening and morning: the second day.

3
Day Three

Let the waters under heaven gather in one place
and let dry land appear

God called the dry land Earth,
and the gathered waters Seas.
God saw that it was good.

There was evening and morning: the third day.

4
Day Four

In the expanse of heaven
let there be lights

God made two great lights:
the greater to govern the day,
the lesser to govern the night,
and he also made the stars.

There was evening and morning: the fourth day.

5
Day Five

Let the waters teem with living creatures
and let birds fly across the sky

God created the great sea creatures
and every living thing moving in the waters, according to its kind.
God saw that it was good.

There was evening and morning: the fifth day.

6
Day Six

In our image,
let us make humankind

God created humankind in his own image,
male and female he created them.
God blessed them and said,
Be fruitful, multiply, and fill the earth.

God saw everything he had made,
and it was very good.

7
Day Seven

God blessed the seventh day
and made it holy

The heavens and earth and all their hosts were finished.
By the seventh day God completed his work,
and ceased from all that he had done.
On the seventh day he rested.

Genesis 2:1–3

God saw everything he had made,
and it was very good.
